The Brief

What the space asked for

A seaside-edge apartment to feel serene and grounded — Japandi simplicity and balance, with just enough warmth and refinement to read as understated luxury rather than bare minimalism.

The Approach

The thinking, made material

Clean lines, gentle curves and open, purposeful layouts set the discipline; elegance is then revealed through material — smooth oak and walnut, linen and wool, polished stone and matte metals. A natural, muted palette of warm whites, greige and soft browns is layered with sparing earthy accents. Lighting stays indirect — wall-washers and cove light tracing texture.

The Outcome

What the space became

A calm, airy and timeless home where luxury is expressed through texture and light rather than statement décor — modern, tranquil, and quietly refined.

Design Notes

The brief, in full.

Design essence — minimalism with warmth

From Japandi: clean lines, gentle curves, open layouts and natural materials, for spaces that are calm, airy and purposeful, emphasising function, proportion and flow.

Understated luxury

Low-key luxury avoids ostentation — elegance revealed through high-quality finishes, refined textures and subtle detailing: soft wood grains, matte metals, polished stone, artisanal textiles.

Natural, muted palette

Neutral, soothing tones — warm whites, greige, soft browns, muted taupe and pale stone — with occasional deep or earthy accents (charcoal, muted green, terracotta) used sparingly for depth.

Texture & materiality as focal points

Rather than statement furniture, luxury is expressed through material — smooth oak and walnut, linen and wool, stone countertops, matte and brushed metals — layers of texture that add richness while keeping the room calm.

Soft, ambient lighting

Layered and indirect — wall-washers, cove lights and soft pendants highlight the natural textures for a gentle, inviting atmosphere.

The bedroom

A serene blend of Japandi minimalism and low-key luxury: a low-profile bed, minimalist nightstands and subtle storage preserve open sightlines and negative space, while natural light filtered through sheer curtains meets warm ambient light for a calm, restful retreat.
